Spirit Master: Fair Café Liqueur
As the trend for coffee-based spirits takes off, SB puts the spotlight on an award-winning liqueur from a sustainable producer.
Every week, SB celebrates some of the top-scoring Master medallists from The Global Spirits Masters blind-tasting competition.
During The Liqueur Masters 2019, which was held in October at an Indian restaurant and bar 1947 London, a team of testers assessed the breadth of the category and awarded eight Master medals to entrants.
In the popular coffee-flavoured liqueurs segment, one brand managed to secure the Master title.
Ethical Wine & Spirits’ Fair Café Liqueur won a Master medal for its “strong roast coffee nose” and “clean, strong coffee flavour”, completed with a finish of “roasted hazelnuts”.

The 22% ABV expression is made from Fairtrade Arabica coffee beans from a co-op of more than 1,900 independent farmers in the Huatusco region of Veracruz, Mexico. The sugar used to make the liqueur is also Fairtrade-certified and comes from various co-ops in countries such as Belize and Paraguay.
Ethical Wine & Spirits recommends serving the liqueur in an Espresso Martini.
To make the Espresso Martini at home, check out the recipe below:
Ingredients:
35ml of Fair Vodka
35ml of Fair Café Liqueur
25ml of Fairtrade-certified espresso
Dash of sugar syrup
Method: Put all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake vigorously. Strain directly into a Martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans.
Fair Café Liqueur is priced at £22 (US$28.30) per 700ml bottle.
